Does Drinking Beer (Especially IPAs) Cause Man Boobs?
Hops, alcohol, and hormones — separating the real mechanism from the internet myth.

A specific claim circulates online: that IPAs, because of their hop content, cause gynecomastia more than other beers. It is a fun claim, and mostly not well supported.
The Hops/Phytoestrogen Claim
Hops do contain a compound called 8-prenylnaringenin, which is technically a phytoestrogen. Studies looking at the actual concentration in a typical beer serving have found it far too low to meaningfully affect hormone levels. You would need to drink an implausible amount of beer for this specific mechanism to matter.
What Alcohol Actually Does to Hormones
The more evidence-supported link is broader: heavy, chronic alcohol use affects liver function, and the liver plays a real role in metabolizing hormones. This is a genuine risk factor with long-term heavy drinking, separate from anything specific to hops or IPAs.
Beer Belly vs. Gynecomastia
A lot of what people call “beer boobs” is simply general weight gain and fat redistribution from regular alcohol consumption — excess calories, not a hops-specific hormonal effect. That would be more accurately described as pseudogynecomastia.
Bottom Line
Moderate beer drinking is not a meaningfully documented cause of gynecomastia, IPA or otherwise. Heavy, chronic alcohol use is a separate and more real risk factor worth taking seriously on its own terms.
