FAQs About Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
Quick answers to the questions we hear most about the weeks after surgery.

These are the questions we see asked most often about the recovery period after gynecomastia surgery. Specifics vary by surgeon and by case, so treat this as a general orientation, not a substitute for your own surgeon’s instructions.
How long do I need to wear a compression garment?
Most surgeons recommend wearing one continuously for the first few weeks, tapering to daytime-only wear after that. Our guide on how long to wear a compression garment covers the general timeline in more detail.
When can I go back to the gym?
Light walking is usually fine within days, but most surgeons ask patients to hold off on chest exercises and heavy lifting for several weeks to let the tissue heal properly.
Will the results be visible right away?
Not fully. Swelling typically masks the final result for weeks, and it can take a few months for the chest to fully settle into its final shape.
Is numbness normal?
Temporary numbness or altered sensation around the nipple is common and usually resolves over the following weeks to months as nerves recover.
When can I sleep on my side again?
Most surgeons recommend sleeping on your back for the first couple of weeks to avoid putting pressure on healing tissue, then gradually easing back into side-sleeping as it feels comfortable.
What counts as normal swelling vs. something to call about?
Gradual, even swelling that slowly improves is expected. Sudden increases in swelling, significant pain, fever, or asymmetric changes are worth calling your surgeon about rather than waiting out.
