Gynecomastia in Teenagers: What's Normal and What Isn't

Pubertal gynecomastia is extremely common — here is what parents and teens should actually expect.

If you are a teenager (or a parent of one) noticing chest changes during puberty, the first thing worth knowing is how common this is: a large share of boys experience some degree of gynecomastia during puberty as hormone levels shift.

What Usually Happens

In most cases, pubertal gynecomastia is mild, affects one or both sides, and gradually resolves within one to two years as hormones stabilize. It is rarely a sign of anything more serious.

When It Is Worth a Doctor Visit

Worth checking in with a doctor if it is causing significant pain, growing rapidly, appears only on one side with a hard or irregular lump, or has not improved after two years. In the meantime, a well-fitted undershirt or light compression top can help with day-to-day confidence without needing to make any bigger decision yet.

Managing it day to day in the meantime?
